We recently reviewed the terms and conditions of four major UK private health insurance providers, Axa PPP, Aviva, Bupa and Vitality Health, to see which would cover an ADHD assessment. Unfortunately, only one of these, Bupa, will cover the cost of an ADHD assessment.

Finding a Diagnostic

It is crucial that someone undergo a thorough test and assessment procedure in order to determine if they suffer from ADHD. It is also crucial to find a certified specialist who has experience in ADHD tests and diagnosis. Selecting the right specialist may seem overwhelming at first but it’s possible to eliminate some of the confusion out of the process by obtaining recommendations from friends and family members, or searching online for specialists with the proper qualifications.

The first step is to speak to your GP and inform them that you think that you or your child could have ADHD. Your GP should take this seriously and refer you to an ADHD specialist if necessary.

Once you’re referred to an ADHD specialist for the first time, the initial ADHD assessment should take about two hours. During this time your healthcare professional will discuss your symptoms, even if they aren’t immediately obvious. They’ll also examine how they affect your health and well-being and determine the best treatment for you.

Prior to your appointment, you’ll typically be asked to complete a variety of questionnaires. These questionnaires are based upon symptoms that are common to ADHD and can help the specialist determine if you have ADHD. After you’ve completed these, the specialist will conduct a physical examination, take notes and perform a psychological evaluation.

After the assessment is complete after the assessment is completed, you will receive a written report and recommendations. The specialist will present the results and may prescribe medication or suggest alternatives to the treatment.
